5 TIPS TO MAKE SPRING CLEANUP LESS OF A CHORE!

5 TIPS TO MAKE SPRING CLEAN-UP LESS OF A CHORE!

1. Spring snowfalls?

Alberta is famous for having our May Long camping weekends cancelled due to spring snowfalls! So, ensure you spread out those snowdrifts evenly over your yard.

This encourages it to melt faster and avoids the risk of having too much moisture in one area that can cause snow mold.

2. Rake it out!

Once the snow has finally left, it’s time for the tools to come out to play.

Use a firm rake to remove dead grass, leaves, animal feces, and other debris.

This allows the new grasses a better chance for germination, to receive the fertilizer, moisture and space to break through into the beautiful Spring air!

3. To aerate or not to aerate?

For Alberta, the best time for aeration is Spring and Fall.

You can aerate annually in high traffic areas or up to every 2-3 years in other areas.

Aerating encourages good air exchange at the root zone.

4. Spring is a great time for your annual mower maintenance!

This includes replacing spark plugs, sharpening blades, cleaning the undercarriage, replacing/cleaning the filter and changing the oil.

Good, regular maintenance of your mower will extend the lifetime and efficiency of your machine.

5. Rev that mower!

Once annual maintenance and the (power)raking is complete, mow the grass once it reaches 2-3 inches.

We recommend the first cut to be about 2 inches and then 2-3 inches after that. Taller mowed grass tends to be more tolerant to stress!

Bag or mulch your clippings, whichever is your preference. Mulching IS a natural fertilizer!
